Mind over Matter
So, I've been meaning to share all about the 5K I ran at the beginning of February. I can hardly believe it's been a month!
Mike and I , along with my friend Paige, ran a 5K on Tybee Island on February 6th. It was amazing and tough at the same time. The day started off super early and rainy. We drove to Tybee and didn't know exactly where we should register for the race...and of course went to the wrong place. At that point, I was nervous, cranky and ready to quit. Who wanted to start a race late? Who wanted to run in cold rain? Why did Mike agree to run a 5K in February?!?!! We were never going to make it to the other end of the island in enough time and find a parking spot.
Well, we made it! We registered and put everything back in the car before the race began. Whew, our first victory. After all the initial, pre-race jitters, we started the run. For the first leg, I ran with Paige...well, Paige ran with me. (I'm much slower than her.) Just after the first mile I was ready to start walking (Paige had already run ahead at her own pace). It was tough, and I was tired. Then, this amazing thing happened.
Mike caught up with me. (He started a little after us to give himself enough time to use the port-a-jon and pin his number on his shirt). Mike was a constant encouragement throughout the race. He didn't let me walk. He kept my pace up and steady. He set small goals for me. All the right things.
Then, with less than one mile left, there was this nagging voice that started saying, "You can't do it. You're never going to make it." It was awful, but I believed it. I believed that voice instead of myself. Will there ever be a day when the voice in my head says, "Yes! You're almost there. You're doing great." I hope for that day. I hope for a day when I can live, walk and RUN in the truth!
It reminded me of how much this journey is more about my mindset than any other habit pattern. "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2. It's a daily process of renewing my mind and being transformed by Jesus.
I finished the race in record time. Amazing. I didn't reach my goal, but I was victorious! For that, I am more than satisfied.
Wanna join us for our next race? It's on March 20th. Click here for more information on the Dawg Trot in Athens. :)
